Reading 1/1:
Read the cause and effect essay by Jeffrey Wael, titled "The Causes and Effects of Climate Change," and then answer the following questions.
The Causes and Effects of Climate Change
Climate change is a problem that has been increasing in severity in recent years, as have its effects on the earth. I will discuss the causes and effects of climate change, focusing on human activity as one of the causes for this change, and some of the effects it will have on the earth. I believe that humans are the main contributors for climate change, which is also known as global warming.Even though humans inhabit the earth and rely on it as currently the only place for us to live, we ultimately contribute the most to making our only home inhabitable. One of the ways humans
cause global warming is by our means of transportation. A large number of cars and trucks that we drive produce harmful chemicals that get released into our atmosphere. In the United
States one fifth of emissions come from transportation vehicles: for every gallon of gasoline, around twenty four pounds of harmful chemicals are emitted ("Car Emissions & Global Warming™n.d.). Many modern countries are pushing for more environmentally friendly vehicles; however, there are many poorer countries where people cannot afford these vehicles. As a result, they have to resort to using older vehicles; the older the vehicle, the more likely it is to be harmful to the environment. Another way humans cause global warming is through major companies and the decisions they make. Many companies often base their decisions on financial profit instead of being aware of the kind of impact that these types of decisions can have on the environment. For example, a factory may be releasing harmful chemicals to the air, however, instead of spending money on a filtration system, the owners may elect to leave it the way it is.These causes, overall, will greatly affect the earth if nothing is done.Today, the effects of climate change are becoming more and more prevalent. The increase in temperature is causing many large bodies of ice around the world to melt. This is a problem

because it melts into the ocean and causes an increase in sea level. These rising sea levels can create many problems for coastal cities and force hundreds of thousands of people's houses to be destroyed. In the year 2005, the global damage cost from floods was estimated to be approximately US$6 billion per year, moreover, it is projected to increase to US$52 billion by 2050

(Hallegatte, 2013). These bodies of ice melting will also greatly affect the animals that were living on them. Many of the animals will die because they will be unable to find a place to live. One species that can fall victim to the melting glaciers is the polar bear; it is expected that continuing melting glaciers will have a severe negative affect on polar bear populations (Prop et al.
2015). Climate change can also cause extreme cases of weather, which can effect the way the farming industry grow their crops. This may force the industry to change the way they grow
their crops, causing them to lose money by making these changes. Climate change will cause declines in yield for many important crops in developing countries, South Asia in particular
(Nelson et al., 2009. p. vii). These cases show the impact climate change has on the earth.
Many human activities often cause climate change, for example, driving vehicles. The result of such actions can greatly affect the earth by melting bodies of ice, thus increasing the sea level. Some may not believe that climate change is caused by human activity; however, I believe it is. I believe any activity humans do to cause global warming is ten times worse than anything else that can be done by anything on earth. The situation of climate change is getting worse and if nothing is done then we will no longer have a world to live in.
