In his 1970 best seller, Future Shock, the writer and futurist Alvin Toffler anticipated this notion of an experience economy to describe one of the defining characteristics of post-industrial society. Experiences delivered in these kinds of transformational businesses include boot camps, religious, spiritual, or cult organizations, but also things like life coaching services, yoga retreats, services aimed at people who have attained a level of security and prosperity and that usually involve a level of discomfort, difficulty, and sometimes even pain. But there are experiences which provide users with deep feelings of satisfaction, connection to something larger,and a sense of personal fulfillment.
