In 1999, marketing researchers Joseph Pine and James Gilmore introduced the notion of the experience economy to describe what they saw as a new and increasingly important layer of economic development built around the provision and purchasing of experiences. This notion of an experience economy was initially exemplified by businesses such as theme parks, holiday resorts and theater restaurants, but increasingly, in many other areas of business as well, where there's a focus on differentiating and adding value to existing products through an experience.
