INNOVATIVE IDEAS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
PARAGRAPH 1. Technology has added to many of the environmental problems that are currently affecting us. Despite this, thoughtful innovations may solve some of them. Ecologist Barry Commoner wrote that "The proper use of science is not to conquer nature but to live in it." In other words, in order to make our world a safe home for future generations, inventors and scientists need to take the environment into account when developing new technology.
PARAGRAPH 2. Cooling and heating homes and offices is a major cause of environmental problems because both require so much power. Some scientists have invented a special fabric to make clothes that can move heat away from the skin to keep people cool. This is an especially innovative solution because cooling one individual is much more efficient than doing the same for a whole building.Others have thought outside the box and come up with creative ideas for heating. The subway trains that run under cities like London produce plenty of unwanted heat. Factories often produce excess heat, too. Many different groups are working on ways to take this heat and use it to keep businesses, schools, and homes warm,
