Reading 1/2:
READING PASSAGE 1
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions below.
PARAGRAPH A. Doing warm-up exercise before working out is very important in many ways. Warm-up exercise can help to increase your heart rate, warm your muscles, tendons and ligaments, and prepare your mind. It is natural for you to think of stretching when we mention warm-up exercise, but they are different.
PARAGRAPH B. Imagine it's a freezing cold day, you're on your way to work, and your car is on the driveway. You don't want to start driving when the car is cold inside. The first thing you do
is to warm the car by running the engine for a while and turning the heater on. That is exactly how a pre-exercise warm-up works. If your body is too cold before exercising, you're more likely
to pull muscles or do other damage to your body. That's why it's essential to warm up properly.
PARAGRAPH C. A good way to get your body ready for an INTENSE workout is to go for a light jog for up to 10 minutes. It will increase your blood circulation to the muscles, tendons and ligaments. This is just like putting oil on the gears of your bike before going for a long cycle ride. Warm-up exercise will prepare the different parts of your body to work together. Your heart rate will increase gradually. Your muscles will be less likely suffer from the injuries, and your more flexible tendons and ligaments are less susceptible to strains.

PARAGRAPH E. Warm-up exercise and stretching are different terms although many people tend to ignore their differences. Both are important for an optimal workout. Warm-up exercise may involve different forms of activities, such as walking, jogging, and rope-jumping, to increase the body temperature and slowly prepare the body for what is to come, while stretching mainly
focuses on the muscles.
PARAGRAPH F. Therefore, it is important to make a distinction between the two principles. For example, if a sprinter begins his race without raising his body temperature through proper warm-up exercise, he will be likely to suffer from injuries to almost every part of his body because the whole body is not prepared. On the other hand, if the sprinter warms up but only skips
stretching, he will be more likely to suffer from injuries to the muscles because they don't have enough warmth to achieve optimal stretch.
PARAGRAPH G. To enjoy your workout, you should have adequate warm-up exercise and a certain period of stretching first. A good preparation for your heart rate and muscles will prevent you from suffering from the injuries in the workout.
