TRS501-CRITICAL READING QUESTION
Read the excerpt below and answer the question.
"Francis believes that consumers are becoming more aware of such "tokenism" from hotels and tour operators that may not have the best interests of the community or the planet true to their hearts. 'My real hope is that we get much more curious and more questioning, and there are rebellious tourists who see through this and ask increasingly tough questions,' he says."
Tokenism: appearing to show concern but in practice doing very little
Question:
What is the role of rebellious tourists in dealing with "tokenism" in the tourism industry?
Write a paragraph from 120-150 words to give your answer.
To put a fine point on it, rebellious tourists have a role to play in addressing tokenism in the tourism industry. By simply not swallowing things whole, these rebels show that they do not accept what is given unto them. The superficial facade of hotels and tour operators that claim to be eco-friendly but actually make little or no difference to the community or the environment are exposed by such travellers. They challenge the tourism industrys opacity and false claims to sustainability by being inquisitive and asking questions that bite deep into its pretentions concerning sustainable practices. Forcing businesses beyond mere tokenism and towards impactful environmental as well as community friendly measures is born of their predictability and authenticity demands. Active participation from tourists can promote a changed course for industry so that calling itself sustainable becomes a standard expectation instead of an advertising tool. In conclusion, responsible questioning by well informed tourists may trigger positive transformation which would result into increased meaningful contributions towards environmental conservation as well as community welfare by tourism sector.

It is my agreement that plastics need to be banned due to its environmental hazardousness. Plastics are non-degradable which implies they do not disintegrate naturally, but instead gather in landfills and oceans where they cause massive damage to wild animals and environments. For example, marine creatures often confuse plastic wastes for food leading to injuries or deaths. Also, as plastics break down, they release poisonous chemicals that pollute both
soil and water.
The second reason to ban plastics is the quantity of plastic waste produced globally. In spite of attempts at recycling, there is only a small percentage of plastics
recycled. This leads most to become litter making the pollution worse and an eyesore environment. Through banning them we will reduce this garbage as well as encourage the use of other eco-friendly options such glass, paper or biodegradable items.Additionally, the production of plastics requires fossil fuels, thus creating global warming. Decreased plastic production will assist in reducing greenhouse gas
emissions and contributes to climate change control. Such as for instance in some countries where plastic bans have been implemented successfully which
has resulted in less pollution and cleaner streets.
