TRS601 - CRITICAL READING QUESTION
Read the following extract from Reading passage 2:
"Governments and motor manufacturers around the world are throwing money and resources into the development of electric vehicles. But can electric power really replace the internal combustion engine before the middle of the century? Maybe it can,but this is by no means certain."
Based on your reading as well as your own experience, write a short response to the following prompt:
Will electric vehicles completely replace gas-powered ones in the future? Explain. You should write at least 120 words.
Electric vehicles may replace gasoline-powered vehicles in the future, but this depends on many factors. Governments and automakers are investing heavily in electric vehicle technology to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change. However, for electric vehicles to completely replace gasoline-powered vehicles, challenges related to technology, infrastructure, and resources need to be addressed.
One of the major challenges is charging infrastructure. In many countries, especially developing countries, the number of electric vehicle charging stations is very limited, limiting the widespread use of electric vehicles. In addition, the cost of producing lithium-ion batteries is still high, making electric vehicles unaffordable for all consumers. And the problems with the resources needed to produce batteries, such as lithium and cobalt, are putting pressure on the environment and the global supply chain.
While electric vehicles offer many environmental benefits, whether they will ever completely replace gasoline vehicles in the future depends on technological developments and improvements in infrastructure. In the future, a combination of electric and gasoline vehicles may be a more viable solution.
